The Center for Liberal Education, also known as the Base for Liberal Education was commissioned to be established by the Ministry of Education in 1999.
The philosophy of liberal education with which the Center works rests on the conviction that all Tsinghua college students should be broadly educated, as well as trained in a particular academic major. The Center seeks to introduce students to courses and programs that would acquaint them with the major approaches to knowledge in areas other than their own academic specialties. It aims at cultivating and developing in students an interdisciplinary perspective across arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, by means of courses, lectures, guided readings, field works, research projects, and other sorts of extra-curriculum activities.
