The Institute of International Studies (IIS) at Tsinghua University was established in 1997 as both a teaching and research institution. All of the Institute’s faculty hold doctoral degrees, possess rich teaching and research experience, and have studied at elite foreign universities.  Instructors also have extensive hands-on experience working in influential government institutions.

The Institute stresses sound scientific research methods and professionalism. Academic research is firmly grounded in theory, while policy research is designed for real-world application. As a result, research conducted by the Institute has considerable social influence and is regularly adopted by various government departments.  Moreover, some projects have earned prestigious national awards and honors.  Principle areas of research include international security strategy, international arms control and disarmament, economic diplomacy, Chinese foreign policy, international political thought, international relations theory, and area studies focusing on East Asia, North America and Europe.

IIS currently enrolls B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. students. The Ph.D. courses emphasize the development of academic research capabilities to prepare students for work at research institutes and universities. M.A. courses stress the acquisition of practical skills necessary for working in governmental organizations and media.  B.A. courses are more comprehensive and stress the importance of a well-rounded education for jobs related to foreign affairs.

IIS has established working relationships with academic and foreign affairs institutions as well as government ministries. A number of  high level officials have been invited as part-time professors.  Additionally, the Institute also has international lecture and student exchange programs with Columbia University, the University of Illinois, the University of Texas, the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, Heidelberg University and other leading institutions.  IIS collaborates with Cambridge University in the publication of The Chinese Journal of International Politics and jointly runs several columns in the prominent Chinese periodicals Global Times, Globe and Economy as well as the People’s Daily Online.

Currently, Professor Yan Xuetong is dean of the department, and Professor Huang Liu Jiangyong , Professo Li Bin are vice-deans.
