Founded in October 1979, with the name of Education Research Office, the  Institute of Education expanded to have its current name in November 1985. It has research units in Higher Education, School Administration, General Education and Chronicles of Tsinghua University, and publishes Tsinghua University Education Studies. Its current faculty and staff include 6 full professors, 6 associate professors, 3 lecturers, and 1 secretary, among whom 10 have doctoral degrees.

  The Institute has a master’s and doctoral program in Higher Education Studies, Education Economics and Management, and a master’s program in Applied Psychology. Since it began to enroll students in 1990, the Institute has graduated a number of high quality students who are serving in colleges, government offices, school administration as well as some big private and state companies. Meanwhile, the Institute has classes for continuing students at the master’s level, to provide training for them to become leaders in teaching and administration for their schools.

  In the past few years, the Institute has undertaken many key education research projects funded at the national and ministerial levels, finished the tasks given by the university, and pushed its research in education onto a higher level to facilitate education reform in the nation. It offers needed courses for both students and teachers at the university, compiles yearbooks of Tsinghua University, and provides researchers in education with books and materials. The Institute has also urged administrators and teachers at the university to take part in a variety of education research projects, and have accomplished a number of research projects in the key areas of education studies, and many of the projects are on the nation’s “7th five-year plan”, “8th five-year plan” and “9th five-year plan”. The Institute is responsible for editing and publishing a number of academic books and textbooks, such as Reform and Innovation, Inheritance and Development, A Study of How to Train Talents in Science and Technology, Problem-Solving Strategies and Skills, Perseverance and Transcendence, General Education—One Perspective on University Education, The Call of the Century, Higher Education and Job Market, Comparative Studies of the Social Functions of Universities, Engineering Education and Industrial Competitiveness, On Education Development. It has won two first prizes for Excellent Achievements in Education Studies in China and 4 first prizes from the Higher Education Association of China for Excellent Achievements as well as more than 10 other prizes.

  Tsinghua University Education Research Group and Tsinghua University Higher Education Association, founded in 1986 and 2004 respectively, are both housed in the Institute, who serves as their secretariat. As non-profitable academic research organizations, they have 13 research divisions with more than 200 members. The two organizations provide a healthy environment for the faculty at Tsinghua to study education and join theory studies with reform practice.

  In 1980, the Institute began to publish the bimonthly journal Education Research Review, whose name was changed to its current name Tsinghua University Education Studies in 1986. With both an ISSN and CN, and subscribers from at home and abroad, the journal has featured more than 1,000 papers, amounting to 7 million words.

  Recently, it has seriously tapped its source of submission to broaden its selection pool, and as a result, the quality and influence of the journal has been increased. Tsinghua University Education studies is currently listed as a core journal in Chinese Core Journal Pandect, and Education Research Bibliography edited by the Institute is an important supplement to Tsinghua University Education Studies.

  The Institute owns a library with a collection of 6,000 books and over 100 journals and journals, 6 of which are English journals.

  The Institute plays an important role in the development of China’ higher education, and strives to contribute to the firm establishment of China’s Socialist system of higher education with Chinese characteristics, and to the early realization  of the goal of the university to build Tsinghua into a world-class university.

  The Director of the Institute is Professor Xie Weihe, and Professors Shi Jinghuan, Wang Sunyu and Li Yue are associate directors.
