The Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University was first established in 1926.  As the first sociology teaching and research institution, the Department has educated many famous sociologists and has profoundly influenced the development of the discipline in China.  Since its restoration in 1999, the Department has put its priority on the recruitment of an outstanding teaching and research team.  Its faculty includes professors who are well-established and internationally known and are among the leaders in their own fields.

Currently, the Department has 8 full professors and 3 associate professors, among whom 6 are Ph.D. advisors and 5 M.A. advisors.  Most of the faculty members have the experiences of study and doing research abroad.  Some have supervised Ph.D. students for other foreign universities.  Each of these professors has remarkable individual achievements.  Some are among the first group of Trans-Century Talents (in Sociology).  Faculty members in the Department have won national scientific research awards many times.  Every year, professors from other prestigious domestic and oversea institutions are invited to teach in the Department.  While emphasizing both theory and methodology in teaching and research, the Department pays close attention to applied sociology.  The Department has three broad specialties—urban sociology, medical sociology, and sociology of transitional societies.

The Department currently enrolls Ph.D. and M.A. students in sociology and Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers in urban sociology (urban planning).  The undergraduate education takes a new model at the university, and the students select their major at the beginning of their junior year.  As a result, the Department also has undergraduate students in their junior and senior years.

The Department publishes an academic journal Tsinghua Sociology Review, which features high-quality academic papers by sociologists from home and abroad. The research units under the Department include Center of Gerontology, Institute of Anthropology, and Institute for the Study of Rural China.

Professor Li Qiang is chair of the Department, and Professor Shen Yuan and Associate Professor Wang Tianfu are vice chairs.
