The Library of SHSS, formerly subsumed under Information Center for the Humanities along with Computer Center, Network Center, and Office for Information in the Humanities, is a brand-new and comprehensive information service organization housed in the SHSS of Tsinghua University. It was in January 2006 that the Library was separated from the Computer Center, Network Center, and Office for Information in the Humanities to better serve SHSS and the university in their rapid development.

　　Presently, harbored in the Library are bibliotheca for SHSS, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the History Department, the Department of Foreign Languages, the Institute of Education, the Institute of Thought and Culture, and so on, covering about one thousand square meters, with over a hundred seats, and a collection of about 150,000 books, most of which are in the humanities and social sciences. The Library has specialized reading rooms, open bookshelves, special collections, conference rooms and a smart reading room equipped with over 20 multi-media computers. Its services include lending books, internet services, patrons training, and so on. The Library is moving toward the goal of a research library in the humanities and social sciences with modernized management, full internet services, and a collection with distinctive features.

　　Since July 1, 2004, the Library has become the first library of its type to open its services to all the students and faculty at Tsinghua, which set a new standard in sharing research resources at Tsinghua.

　　The open service is a new starting point for the Library. Since the try-out service two years ago, the librarians have been constantly reminded of the urgent demands of the readers for use of books here, the attention given to the service by the leaders of Tsinghua University, SHSS, and the Tsinghua University Library, and the enthusiastic support from our colleagues in the Tsinghua University Library. We will continue to work hard to provide enthusiastic, considerate and careful services for all the students and faculty, and let every patron come with hope and leave with satisfaction.
