Tsinghua University is striving to build itself into a comprehensive and open world-class research university. It has decided to speed up developing its programs in the humanities and social sciences into an indispensable component in the general structure of the university. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences aims at the general goals of the university, while trying very hard to make its programs amenable to the pace of economic and social progress in the new century. It adheres to the maxim:“Be conversant with the ancient and the modern, and versed in the Chinese and the Western; conjoin the humanities and sciences to innovate and make a difference.” The top priorities it upholds in the research and teaching are a solid foundation, practice and applications, and interdisciplinary blending. The research programs in the School cover many subjects of study, but it maintains the integrity of its programs and will have more tier-1 and tier-2 programs step by step.

currently has 7 tier-1 Ph.D. and M.A. Degree Disciplines (Marxist Theories, Chinese Language and Literature, History, Philosophy, Sociology, and Theoretical Economics (a co-hosted program with the School of Economics and Management), Public Policy & Management (a co-hosted program with the School of Public Policy & Management), 4 Tier-2 Ph.D. and M.A. Degree Disciplines (International Relations, Higher Education Studies, Physical Education and Training, English Language and Literature), 8 Tier-2 M.A. Degree Disciplines (Technology for Education, Applied Psychology, Sociological Studies of Sports and Culture, Somatology for Sports, Linguistics & Applied Linguistics, Japanese Language and Literature, Art,  History of Science & Technology), 4 Bachelor's Degree Programs (Pilot Class in the Humanities(Including Chinese Language and Literature, History, Philosophy), Pilot Class in Social Sciences(Including Economics, Sociology, International Relations), English, Japanese), 5 Postdoctoral program(Philosophy, Sociology, Marxist Theories, Chinese Language & Literature, History), and 1 key program (Special Histories). The School of Humanities and Social Sciences has 8 departments, 5 institutes, 3 centers (for details see SHSS homepage), and about 26 interdisciplinary research institutions. The core academic journals Journal of Tsinghua University (philosophy and social sciences edition) and Tsinghua University Education Studies are published by SHSS. Currently, the School has undertaken 370 research projects, among which 70 are national projects, and 120 are provincial projects, and has received over 200 awards of various kinds, and published 2970 research papers and 589 books, including translations. The School also actively seeks academic collaboration with institutions at home and abroad, and has set up extensive academic exchange programs with institutions in North America, Europe, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, and has hosted more than 50 international academic conferences. To better serve the needs of the broad society, the School has set up a training section with degree and non-degree programs for continuing education. Every year it opens dozens of graduate classes, advanced seminars, training classes for ministries of the central government, local governments, as well as state and private companies, and has trained for them more than 1000 people.

The SHSS of Tsinghua blessed with these favorable advantages looks to greater development in this new century. We will make its tenth anniversary the new starting line and continue to work hard to bring to a higher level the quality of our students, teaching staff, scholarship, teaching and research conditions, and social services, and to make contributions worthy of its stature to the noble endeavor to make Tsinghua a world-class university and to the great revival of the Chinese nation.
